🧗 Climbing makes Forbes 30 Under 30 👏

PLUS: Will Bosi has been a busy little bee...

It’s Pump TIme Baby 💪

Howdy. FlashPumped here. We’re not just any climbing newsletter, we’re a “cool” newsletter.

Here’s what we got for y’all today:

  • Janja makes Forbes 30 Under 30

  • Climbing has made it to Congress 🧑‍⚖️

  • Will Bosi has been a busy little 🐝

  • Action across the Pond

So let’s get into it!

Janja Makes The Forbes 30 Under 30

We have another climber on the Forbes 30 Under 30! 🎉 🥳 🎊

Janja Garnbret, the Competition GrandMaster herself has made the cut and can add this accolade to her already long list accomplishments.

As a quick reminder, her trophy cabinet is currently made up of:

  • Olympic Gold 🥇

  • 6 World Championships titles 🏆

  • 10 Overall World Cup wins 🎖

  • 37 World Cup victories 🏅

I’m guessing that’s more than one cabinet!

Other climbers who made the list include Coca-Cola wonder-child Miss Shiraishi and fellow competitor Jain Kim. Quite the pedigree!

The times she’s has been outdoors, JJ has also been equally impressive. In 2021, she got the first female 8c onsight and has since sent multiple harder routes.

She also breezily dropped on her Instagram profile that she’d been working La Dura Dura, 9b+.

Now that’s something we’d all love to see!

Here’s to hoping JJ spends more time outdoors ❤️❤️❤️

Climbing Makes it to Congress

Rock climbing has made it to the US Congress!

GearJunkie reports that a historic bill, the “Protect America’s Rock Climbing Act” is currently making it’s way through Congress.

Why is this bill needed?

Apparently the National Park Service proposed to ban all bolting in designated Wilderness Areas. These include some of the most iconic locations in climbing history: El Capitan, The Diamond, Joshua Tree and others.

Apparently anchors are something of a luxury and we should make do without 😲

In response, the bill would provide federal management of fixed anchors plus other hardware and hopefully provide “some level of control” for climbers on anchor placement.

Our Favourite Scot has been Busy

Will Bosi has been a right busy little 🐝

He’s been sending some hardcore Swiss boulders, building a replica of Burden of Dreams and at the same time making videos of it all, purely for our pleasure!

They’re such darlings these Scots 😇

Firstly for the boulders.

The victims, which he laid to rest back in December on a trip to Switzerland, were made up of:

  • Dreamtime V15

  • Big Paw V14 (flash)

  • The Dagger V13/14 (flash)

  • Flash Flood V13

Dreamtime, V15, in particular is a historically significant route as it was the first V15 in the world. Initially sent by Fred Nicole back in 2000, it’s since remained a benchmark V15. Or so they say 🤷‍♂️

It’s seen multiple repeats over the years by top climbers including Alex Megos, Big Daddy Sharma and Jan Hojer to name just a few.

Next up, Burden of Dreams, 9A.

The first 9A in the world has been getting a lot of attention recently. Thanks to the wonders of modern technology, we can now truly appreciate the difficulty of the climb, all from the warmth of our own living rooms 🫖

Here’s some awesome footage of this beast of a boulder:

All this footage really gives you an idea of how tough this line really is! Plus, I thought I’d mention, the replica is “only” on a 40° board, not the actual 45°.

Piece of cake!

All Mind-boggling if you ask me 🤯

Lots of Action across the Pond

There’s been some big ticks in the US.

Matt Segal reports on Instagram that he sent Kryptonite, 9a, at Colorado’s Fortess of Solitude. The symbolic Tommy Caldwell route is considered to be the first of the grade in North America.

The icicles make the send that even more impressive! ❄️🥶

🇺🇸 ⛰ 🏈

Fellow American, 22 year old Cameron Horst has also been battling the cold and sending the good stuff.

He ticked off a multitude of 9a’s, including:

  • Smoke Wagon at Mount Potosi, Nevada

  • Southern Smoke Direct, Red River Gorge

  • Zoolander, also at Red River Gorge, Kentucky.

Southern Smoke Direct is notably known as a benchmark 9a and was flashed by The Ondra back in 2012.

Good job lads! 👏 🇺🇸

From The MotherShip

Strong shoulders and improved scapula stability are a big must for many climbers out there. Add these 5 exercises to your strength training program to get bullet-proof shoulders and avoid injury 💪

And Beyond…

  • We’ve all seen or heard of stories of terrible belaying, people decking-out or not checking your partner. Well this climber tied in with her Grigri while her mother belayed her with, wait for it, her hands 😳

That’s quite an accomplishment. Thankfully no-one was injured 😓

  • UKC remind us of a simple item that could save your life in difficult situations. Something to consider adding to the pack before your next outing.

Bacon & Waffles

That's it for today. See y’all next week!
